The 12m tall golden sitting statue of Maitreya Buddha as seen on 1st June 2009. Maitreya is the future Buddha said to be preparing to come to earth. The red Chamba Lhakhang of Maitreya is the newest addition to the Thiksay Monastery, Leh town, Ladakh Valley, Jammu & Kashmir state, India. Thiksay, founded in the 15th century, sits on a hill 19 km southeast of Leh town, and houses approximately 100 monks. Photo by Suzanne Lee
