Chamba, a 19 year old monk flips his notes as he repetitiously chants prayers while beating a drum in the Gonkhang of Thiksay Monastery, Leh, Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, India, on the morning of 1st June 2009. The 500 year old Gonkhang is a dark and solemn room that houses ferocious protecters of the dieties. The designated monk that chants in this room does so for 6 hours per day, every day for a full year. Thiksay, founded in the 15th century, sits on a hill 19 km southeast of Leh town, and houses approximately 100 monks. Photo by Suzanne Lee
