After transporting coal by foot from dawn to dusk, the young miners spend 4 hours of their evenings burning coal piles, to prepare the coal for sale the next day, on the fringes of the coalmines of Dhanbad, Jharkhand, India. The coal-pickers live in a small coal-picker's hamlet a distance away from a higher-caste hamlet where the children go to school and do not mingle with the lower-caste coal-pickers.
