Manju Devi, 25, and her niece Anita Devi, 17, tend to a tree in her backyard plantation of forest trees behind her house in Rajera village, Bikaner, Rajasthan, India on October 23, 2016. Non-profit organisation Technoserve works with farmer's wives in Bikaner, providing technical support and training for backyard plantations that help these communities cope with the harsh climate of the Thar desert. The forest trees provide shade to the people and their cattle, reduces water loss and sand shifting, raises the value of their properties by improvement of the landscape and raises the pride of their families, ensuring better opportunities for their children.
